'Comet' was developed as a bittern variety at the "United States Department of Agriculture" (USDA) and registered in 1961.
With its content of 10% alpha - acid was this variety no longer competitive and the cultivation was stopped in the 80ies.
Indeed, 'Comet' has also a flavour which is in line with the current phase of highly sophisticated beers: The smell and also the flavour of the beer is described with pineapple and elderflower.
This variety offers an agronomical feature, too: the umbels are very big and the leaves light green, nearly yellowish.

General characterisation
'Comet' was developed as a bitter variety by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and approved in 1961.
With an alpha acid content of around 10%, this variety was soon no longer competitive and cultivation was discontinued in the 1980s.
However, 'Comet' also has an aroma that fits perfectly into the current phase of highly differentiated beers: the smell and taste of the beer is described as "pineapple" and "elderflower".
This variety also offers an agronomical specialty: the umbels are very large and the foliage is very light green, almost yellowish!

Sensory assessment:
"Beers with these hops unfold the pineapple-fruity and elderflower-flowery aromas of the cones in the same way. It doesn't matter whether it's in a wheat beer, an ale or a lager. Whether hopped in a whirlpool or dry hopped."
