In Autumn all nutrients are moving from the leaves into the root stock and the growth above ground dies off. The plant formes now the vegetative buds for the new season. Just the root stock survives underground. For further development hops needs a certain level and duration of cold exposure. As deeper the cold as less time is needed. In spring the first vegetative shoots are developing and are growing up the wire. Hops is a short-day plant, meaning it needs a certain night period for a certain length of time per day for flowering.
